I want to adopt a yorkie. What do I do?Adding a yorkie to your family is a serious decision to make. Yorkies take a lot of time and energy. It also is a big financial commitment. Food, toys and medical care costs can add up. Please consider al of these factors and talk about adopting with all members of your family. If you feel you are ready, please fill out an adoption application on our website. Be sure to call your vet and give him permission to release information to us Back to TopI just submitted my adoption application. Now what? The application will be sent to one of our representatives. It sometimes takes a couple days to get back to you. If you do not hear anything, feel free to email us at okyorkierescue@yahoo.com. Also, be sure to call your vet and give him/her permission to speak with OKYR. Back to TopOnce my application has been submitted, how do I get approved for adoption? Our application process includes checking the vet reference and your personal references listed on your application. After these have been done, we do a home visit to ensure that your family is right for one of our dogs. After these have been done, you are ready to adopt! Back to TopHow do you choose which family gets to adopt each yorkie? Please be aware that we get several applications for one dog. The young, healthy female is more attractive to most families than the senior male. Giving more information on the adoption application makes it easier for them to get feeling for how your family is and makes you 'stand out' more. Email exchanges also help. Please keep in mind that we try to find the best home that is suited to the dogs needs, and if you are not right for one dog, another that is perfect for your family may come into rescue in the future. Back to TopDo you have a place where we can come and meet the available pets? No. We do not have a central location where you can meet all the pets. Our dogs are fostered in private foster homes, so that they can receive the best care while waiting for their adoptive homes Back to TopWhat is a home visit?A home visit is an evaluation of the home environment and the all members of the prospective adoptive family. One of the representatives of OKYR will conduct the visit. All arrangements are prearranged between the OKYR representative and the prospective family. Back to TopWhat if I want to adopt one of your yorkies and I am located in another state? We do not ship our dogs out of state. In state adoptions have priority over out of state adoptions Back to TopDoes OKYR adopt to families with children?Due to their size we are very cautious when adopting to a home with children. Each dog and potential adoptive family will be reviewed on case by case basis. Please read the dog’s story to get an idea of how he/she would do with children Back to TopHow much does it cost to adopt a yorkie?Adoption donations range from $150-$600, depending on the age and health of the dog Back to TopWhy aren’t your rescue dogs free? Don’t they need good homes? The adoption donations very rarely cover the costs of vetting for our dogs. We do not come close to breaking even on costs of vetting. We rely on donations from caring people to cover for some of our expenses. Remember, all of our members are volunteers so all of the money that the organization raises goes towards the dogs. Back to TopI would like to donate. How do where can I send it?There are several ways to donate, please see our donation page Back to TopI need to surrender my yorkie. What do I do?Go to our surrender page and review the information there. If after reading all of the help and options we have provided, you still need to surrender your yorkie, fill out the surrender application Be sure to include your dogs age, health and any behavioral issues if possible. Someone will be in contact with you soon thereafter to make arrangements as long as we have room. Back to Top |
